Cruz Ugarte

A woman’s body is a battlefield from the day she is born. Beauty standards, behaviour, diets, plastic surgery… During her residency Cruz Ugarte investigated different pieces of armour to make women less vulnerable. Using humour and a hint of irony as her tools, she crafted ceramic sleeves with tattooed skulls and flowers, knee pads to sow on your jeans, and a large collections of nipples that might be joined to form a chainmail dress. The works are fragile and combative, related to body politics. In contrast, the series of decorated plates Ugarte made as well seem more like the discovery of a foreign land, her first foray into the realm of ceramics.
