Agla\u00e9 Jarry Wilson\u00a0is graduating from the\u00a0DAE master Critical Inquiry Lab\u00a0with a thesis on\u00a0the\u00a0different ways\u00a0people\u00a0identify\u00a0or are identified as black.\u00a0She found that in the United States,\u00a0identity\u00a0inescapably\u00a0hinges on heritage\u00a0(think of Adrian Piper\u2019s\u00a0investigation of black identity for instance), while\u00a0in Europe, there\u00a0is more\u00a0room for\u00a0self-perception.\u00a0The importance of\u00a0heritage\u00a0is reflected in the pan-African flag designed in the US over a century ago. Its red,\u00a0black\u00a0and green horizontal bands\u00a0represent, respectively:\u00a0the blood that unites all people of black African ancestry;\u00a0the\u00a0nation of black people; and the abundant natural wealth of Africa.\u00a0Jarry\u00a0Wilson took this flag as a starting point for an installation of hundreds of ceramic tiles,\u00a0glazed\u00a0red,\u00a0black\u00a0and green.
