Christian Schwarz has been selected Sound & Ceramics resident 2026<\/h2>\n

Christian Schwarz<\/span><\/p>\n

The overwhelming response to our open call for a pilot residency Sound & Ceramics resulted in a large number of original, challenging proposals. Such a pity that the committee consisting of Willem Twee Studios and EKWC staff members could only select one candidate! Following an interesting, substantive discussion, we did agree: Christian Schwarz will be the first Sound & Ceramics resident.<\/p>\n

Christian Schwarz, who graduated in 2023 from the ArtScience Interfaculty at KABK, is critical of the ubiquitous, technological protocols endlessly collecting data about us and our environment. Processing life into ones and zeroes, this information is being used in ways we can hardly ever influence or control. Schwarz makes these processes tangible in installations that transpose data into sound, movement, objects and images, using computer code, electronics and DIY equipment.<\/p>\n

Surveillance cameras spy on each other, antennas capture encrypted telephone traffic, industrial cranes move through space in response to one another \u2013 always accompanied by algorithmic compositions based on data that is being generated by the installations.<\/p>\n

During his residency at EKWC and Willem Twee Studios, Schwarz wants to develop a sculpture that can function as a specific type of dielectric resonator antenna. Instead of using a metal radiator, this antenna uses electromagnetic fields inside a carefully shaped ceramic block to generate soundwaves. The advantage of ceramics is that it hardly loses energy, doesn\u2019t weaken the signal and requires low power. Eventually, Schwarz aims to build a series of unique radio-antennas that can be used for modular, personalised networks. This opens up potential alternative modes of communication and decreases our dependency on commercial enterprises.<\/p>\n

For this fascinating project, Schwarz can experiment with ceramic materials, firing temperatures and glazes at EKWC, while using the electronic sound equipment at Willem Twee Studios to tune the antennas.
