Kate Ive (UK) has been working with an ocean data scientist, identifying research areas related to the human impact on the ocean, such as coral bleaching and chemical pollution. Kate translated these numerical datasets into geometrical patterns that were engraved by a hand-operated lathe into models, from which she created plaster moulds for casting. The idea is to be able to read back the data stored in the pieces. The shapes of the pieces are based on an etching she found of 15 lachrymatories; small vessels found in Roman and late Greek tombs, that are thought to have been bottles into which mourners dropped their tears.
