Inez de Brauw (NL) wanted to break open the flat surface of her paintings and bring her work into the three-dimensional realm. Accustomed to the directness and speed of painting, the slow process of working in ceramics was a great challenge for (the impatient) de Brauw. Several pieces broke, for example, because they were taken out of the mold too early. As a fellow resident comfortingly told her: “Ceramics takes a strong heart”. And as de Brauw herself says: “Ceramics is tolerating; I never knew what I would get.” In these breaks, a friendly relationship with the clay eventually developed, in which Inez found the balance between a planned and spontaneous way of working. De Brauw focused on the dialogue between painting and creating three-dimensional objects combined in mise en abyse; a method of rendering a literary or visual work in another work of the same kind.
