Anna Orlikowska

The crystal sound of glaze that crackles as it cools down; ethereal tingling, joyful and melancholy, every jubilant tone a tiny loss of tension until the ceramics is finally silent. Anna Orlikowska recorded this song of one of her vases in EKWC’s sound lab, straight from the kiln, to be played back from within the vessel as a memory of transition. For her residency, the artist was inspired by vessels in the floors and walls of ancient theatres that amplify the sounds from the stage. The six pieces she made serve as receivers and speakers, focusing and articulating every reverberation. Each resonates at a specific pitch, a property Orlikowska wants to explore in different performances where the ceramics acoustically respond to the singer’s voices and their environment. Meanwhile, the video and sound documentation she makes of every step in the process are an integral part of the work.
