There’s something refreshing about the tests in Marlou Breuls’ studio. The colours are vibrant, the shapes a bit odd, the texture unusual, like tufted wool. Breuls once used tufting for a large installation (Lady in Rug), and adapted the technique to create similar effects in latex at her studio House of Rubber, where she dissolves the borders between body and object. As a fashion designer she dressed Björk and SIA, now she tries her hand at ceramics, using an adjusted air pressure gun to create clay tufts. The loops cover a trophy cup to end in dozens of outstretched fingers lining the mouth. They also cover a large boudoir for Breuls’ dresses, endless rubber-like limbs draped around the chest, a fashionable head resting on top like a tired hat. A piled snake of extruded clay connects a hand to a foot; surreal sculpture in the kiln hall.
