Squares and hexagons. At EKWC, Van Beek revisited his own tulip tower, leaving certain design choices open to the employees at producer CorUnum, in accordance with Berlage’s ideals of worker advancement. The vases’ shapes are largely determined by Duplo flowers, which happen to be pentagonal. Van Beek also made an eclectic series of candlesticks, some inspired on Wiener Werkstätte designs by Susi Singer and Kitty Rix, others on an antique drawing or a present-day monster dildo that references Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien’. Lucious surfaces, from gold lustre to thickly applied crawling glazes, turn the candlesticks into a celebration of ambiguous beauty.
