Jesus Canuto Iglesias

There’s a pulse running through Jesus Canuto Iglesias’ sculptures and installations: a hum, a beat, a shudder. His works are unapologetically man-made, mechanic, composed of chains, metal, motors, and yet they convey life, the energy of matter, the voice of an industrial spirit reaching out. At EKWC he produced Outside Influences, a set of curved ceramic rods meant to caress a person’s head. Like smooth tentacles glazed with copper oxide and titanium lustre they transfer the sounds of stepper motors directly to the skull where they resonate inside the mind. Meanwhile, Iglesias collaborated with Brigitte Louter in a project focussing on bird callings, which they seek to reproduce with an organ-like ceramic instrument. They also investigated albatross’s courtship rituals, emulating the intricate movements of these majestic birds with ceramic beaks mounted on programmable robot arms. The mechanical creatures mimicking nature invite humans to reflect on their own behaviour.
