Joran van Soest arrived at EKWC with a load of large unfinished paintings in which he had been investigating intersubjective space and collective memories. Surrounded by these images he wanted to create sculptures that might evoke the same shared sense of space and distance, of events, (dis)connections and experiences that shape human relations. A campfire for instance, drawing people into a communal sphere of warmth and light defined by the darkness around them. Or a radio tower, sending and receiving, relaying messages and music on waves permeating the world, setting off thoughts and emotions. Chairs, symbols of sitting together in conversation at meals or meetings, or as an audience attending a performance or debate. The resulting works have a fragmentary character, sketchy, poetic, and yet they are solid, both extending and centring the sphere of his paintings, connecting them to the world at large.
