In a world failed by reason, perhaps we must revive the ancient gods to make sense of it all? During her EKWC residency, Maga Berr created several large sculptures of ancestral gods connected to the sun, the earth, the oceans and the sky. They will be part of an installation that includes smells and sounds, like the rushing of waves emanating from the statue of Yemaya. This river deity of Yoruba origin became the goddess of the oceans among descendants of enslaved Yoruba people who survived the transatlantic voyage to the Caribbean and South America. Drawing connections between past and present, exploration and exploitation, rationality and domination, Berr seeks to make people reflect on a different relationship with nature. As the Inca sun god Wiracocha explains: humans only fear his heat today because of the pollution in the air. He refuses to be blamed for the mess we made.
