Open call for material residency

After a succesful pilot with artists Oscar Peeters and Sterre Mette, the EKWC is now offering short residencies for artists who want to conduct material research. At the beginning of this year Peters and Mette stayed at EKWC for a week to experiment with making art from a cardboard pulp, sawdust and plaste mixture and with a foam plaster, both in development by EKWC’s Sander Alblas.

Alblas, 3D and digital advisor: ‘Making ceramic work takes a lot of time and energy. Working with other materials is sometimes faster and can produce just as successful end results. We are always looking for new materials that we can apply in our centre.’

With this, and within the mould-making workshop, we are exploring how waste materials such as sawdust and cardboard can be recycled to reduce plaster consumption, make moulds lighter and offer more sustainable material for projects that only require one ore two castings per mould.

Therefore, we are inviting artists to conduct research with both EKWC’s and the artists own contributed materials. In this, we are emphasising sustainability and applicability. A condition for the material residency is that is does not involve ceramic research. Firing is not allowed.

Research and experiment are among EKWC’s main pillars. From 22 May to 10 June, there is still room for two residents who both want to research materials with us for one week. Are you interested? Send a work plan with research question by 1st May to info@ekwc.nl with the subject ‘material residency’.
