The term ‘artist-in-residence’ says it all: the creative professionals who work at EKWC also live there for three months. For some, being away from home for so long can be difficult, but all residents agree that having three months to concentrate fully on their creative process, surrounded by all the materials and equipment they need, is a luxury.
On average, there are fifteen residents working at EKWC at the same time, with new residents starting and completing their residency every week. As the composition of the group changes gradually throughout their stay, residents have the opportunity to meet many new peers. Residents share experiences, ideas, tips and recipes. Lifelong relationships and friendships are forged at EKWC.
Each resident has their own room (including a bed, a bathroom with a shower, and a desk), and a light, spacious studio in which to work. Residents have access to these spaces and most of the centre’s workshops and equipment twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
The residents share the large, open-plan kitchen, which serves as an inviting place to meet and relax. On weekdays, EKWC staff join the residents for lunch and coffee breaks. In the evenings, the residents cook for each other based on a rota they draw up themselves.
