Frances Goodman (ZA) aims to raise questions around feminine identity (through her working practice)— especially in relation to social norms, popular culture, and the beauty industry. Her tools of practice are the materials and labour of the beauty industry, creating works that are simultaneously seductive and appalling. She had very little experience working with clay when she arrived at the centre, yet she was seduced by the opportunity to work on a large scale. The over two-meter-tall artworks she made, titled ‘Size Queen’ and ‘Crowning Glory’ are hand-built with extruded coils: she used cardboard stencils to guide and support her shapes. Goodman wanted make use of all the available techniques at the centre so she collaborated with our Fablab to digitally create both positive and negative moulds for the jewels. She also experimented with a wide pallet of glazes, including luster and an iris glaze.
