Aglaé Jarry Wilson is graduating from the DAE master Critical Inquiry Lab with a thesis on the different ways people identify or are identified as black. She found that in the United States, identity inescapably hinges on heritage (think of Adrian Piper’s investigation of black identity for instance), while in Europe, there is more room for self-perception. The importance of heritage is reflected in the pan-African flag designed in the US over a century ago. Its red, black and green horizontal bands represent, respectively: the blood that unites all people of black African ancestry; the nation of black people; and the abundant natural wealth of Africa. Jarry Wilson took this flag as a starting point for an installation of hundreds of ceramic tiles, glazed red, black and green. Using seven different recipes and firing techniques for each colour, she introduces the nuance so badly needed in a divided, divisive world.
