When an artist tells you that any interpretation is fine because ‘it’s all bullshit anyway’, you know they want people to take their work seriously. How, then, to do justice to Cameron Platter’s collection of brightly decorated vessels with their engraved texts and thickly applied glazes that crack like weathered enamel? The bottles, bowls and vases apparently refer to various areas and ages. But what to make of the rainbows and the rats; the references to measurement, money and calculation; the ticking clock, the rearranged calendar? Vast landscapes, starry skies, advertisements, announcements, handcuffs, omnipresent eyes… YOU ALWAYS WIN, promises an oddly numbered roulette wheel. INJURED? – written upside down. “It’s from an ad for legal representation,” Platter says. His deceivingly casual observations combine to reveal endless cracks in the superficial slogans and tokens of commodified life, both mocking its twisted logic and suggesting a different order. Feel free to disagree though.
